The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) is a federal tax credit incentive available to private-sector businesses when they hire individuals from 12 target groups who face significant barriers to employment.
The WOTC was established to help people from the target groups move from economic dependency into self-sufficiency, while at the same time helping employers reduce their federal income tax liability.
The target groups include certain public assistance recipients, veterans, persons who have completed or are completing rehabilitative services and qualified ex-felons.
The WOTC allows an employer to reduce federal tax liability by up to $9,000 per new hire. The tax credit applies only to new hires who start work by August 31, 2011. A newly hired employee may not have worked for the hiring employer anytime in the past and may neither be a relative or dependent of the business owner nor a majority owner of the business.
